What Are You In The Middle Of?

by Pete Ferguson

New beginnings are always exciting. Ending something can be exhilarating, rewarding – disappointing, depressing or sad.

But if you look at your life today, you are in the middle of many things. And it is in the middle where winners are separated from losers. It is in the middle where we can determine the end.

Poet Linda Ellis wrote about the “dash” between the years of your birth and death. You certainly are somewhere in the middle of that continuum if you are reading this today. I’m somewhere in the middle of “1972 ~”

Last night we watched Michael Phelps close his 19th Olympic Medal – a record that may not be beat for many years or a lifetime. But Phelps closed his interview by saying he still has three races … and then there will be future events in his life to live. And there may be family, continued fame, opportunities to teach others.

July is the dash of 2012 according to most world calendars.

This year I hit 40, the middle of my quest to 80 years. And then 50 will mark the middle of my quest for 100.

Today is also Wednesday, the middle of the modern workweek.

What can you yet do this week in your path to excellence?

Go to the gym? Sit and read with a child? Plan a good date for the weekend? Write in your journal? Read a good book …

According to the book, “Outliers,” the secret to becoming a phenomenon is the middle. “Overnight success” is usually the culmination of 10,000 hours of practice according to the research collected by author Malcolm Gladwell.

Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, The Beatles, all paid their dues in the middle. And then the right time and opportunity presented itself and they all took a chance and went towards excellence.

In the room next door, I hear my son struggling through a new piano piece. By December it will transform into a polished piece for a recital. But today, it is hard work – note by note and line by line.

What are you in the middle of today?

Happy Hump Day!

  1. Very well said. I use to look at people who were successfull or at the top of their game. I believed that all they did was flip a switch to get there. I kept looking for my switch. Now I understand that success is the product of many mundane, repetitive acts.

  2. I’m in the middle publishing this new release, and you nailed it quite well!

The middle is where we give up or press forward. We either see it as a challenge and overcome it, or as an endless problem with no island insight. July and Wednesday marks the great symbolic points of what the middle is all about, and in an instance we can lose momentum.

I’m turning 37 this month, and it’s a middle for sure, but at the same time it’s the first year of the rest of my life. I hope that my energy and zest for life never dies but only increases along the way.

Here’s to the middle! Where all can made by it, but the great few choose make it…
