If you are currently frustrated with your employment, boss, or career situation, I hope you have not decided to quit and stay.
Julianne* was an MBA graduate who was considered one of the best marketers in her class. She had interned for a prestigious marketing firm and was sought after by several different companies.
She finally picked one company for its reputation, but quickly discovered her new boss was very domineering, demeaning, and discouraging. He was the kind of person who sucked up all of the oxygen when he entered the room.
Rather than promote an environment which allowed for all to contribute, he instead had to be the center of attention at meetings and social gatherings. If he couldn’t be the center of attention, he would say very little and find a reason to be excused.
Not wanting to be a “quitter” on her resume, Julianne instead decided to quit giving her best and stay for 2-3 years and then move on.
I hope you have not decided to quit and stay. If so, this is your wake up call! Time to reengage and get back to being passionate about your work.
In the book Multipliers – “How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter” – author Liz Wiseman author discusses the difference between a true leader, or Multiplier, who knows how to increase the genius of all those around them, and the ideal killer, self-absorbed Diminisher who collects talented people like trinkets and stifles their creativity and passion.
In her research, Wiseman predicts that Diminishers only get between 20-50% of the talent and hard work of those around them – if they are able to keep people around them for long.
Wiseman’s research also confirms the Multiplier Effect – Leaders who build up those around them, challenge, inspire, and provide the roadmap to success – get 120% return on their investment. Statistically, that may seem impossible, but as Wiseman points out, Multipliers see other’s true potential, and drive them past their comfort zone (100%) and push them to the next level (1.2 – 1.5 multiplier effect).
I’ve had moments where I decided to quit and stay. I worked for a family company where it was evident that if you were not family, you would not be promoted. I worked hard, went through the motions, but my boss was family, and my boss was a micromanager who suffocated creativity, intuition, and made going to work each day drudgery. Thankfully I was able to switch bosses after a very frustrating few months and life became better overnight and productivity soared.
Regardless if you are self-employeed or working in a large organization, you have the ability to be a Leader. Encourage those around you. Seek out creative solutions. Allow for small failures in moving forward fast. Learn from the mistakes and allow others to as well.
If you have decided to quit and stay, shame on you. It is time to take action. Either reengage or start the job search – today!
